Kate Middleton and Prince William Could Be Planning a Secret Home Renovation
Adelaide Cottage might be getting a makeover.
Much has been said about Kate Middleton and Prince William's choice to call Adelaide Cottage home. It's away from the hustle and bustle of Buckingham Palace, it's quaint and compact, and most famously, there's not enough room at the four-bedroom residence for the Cambridges to have live-in staff. However, according to The Mirror, the Prince and Princess of Wales may have a way to give their family a little more room.
Royal insiders told the publication that William is considering expanding his home in an unorthodox way. Naturally, Adelaide Cottage can't be torn down and rebuilt from the ground up, but right next door, there's a separate annex that the family can renovate.
"Nobody knows that there is quite a spacious red-brick annex building that's not being used next door to Adelaide Cottage," a source shared. "It's currently inhabitable and needs extensive renovation works if it were to be used. Discussions have been ongoing for a while about using the property as part of the overall cottage grounds, but it's just about finding the right time to kick the project off."
One concern that Wiliam reportedly has is the public perception of spending money on something like a complete reno. That's why things haven't moved forward just yet.
"William is very conscious of the public scrutiny over the royal family's spending habits, so he is looking at the best way to cover any renovation costs," the insider continued. "It's a project that's very much been put on the back burner for now due to the family's unfortunate position, but it will be looked at again when the time is right."
Previously, sources shared that William and Kate were very happy in the home as it is and that the family also has access to other properties, including Anmer Hall near King Charles's Sandringham estate.
Back before they stepped down as senior royals, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spent $3 million to remodel their former royal residence, Frogmore Cottage. Naturally, that price tag drew criticism from the public since it was pulled from taxpayer funding and Harry and Meghan later reimbursed the funds in 2021. It's safe to assume that William would want to avoid similar scrutiny.
"This contribution as originally offered by Prince Harry has fully covered the necessary renovation costs of Frogmore Cottage, a property of her majesty the queen, and will remain the U.K. residence of the duke and his family," Harry's spokesperson said at the time, though he and Meghan haven't used the property since and were reportedly "evicted" from it by King Charles.
