Catherine, Princess of Wales during a visit to The Royal Marsden Hospital on Jan. 14, 2025 in London, EnglandKate Middleton made a discreet but chic nod to Princess Diana on her first solo engagement of the year.
While visiting the Royal Marsden Hospital in London on Jan. 14, Kate wore her go-to color of the moment, an all-burgundy outfit, to chat with cancer patients and meet some of the staff at the hospital where she herself received treatment last year for cancer.
Wearing a burgundy tartan coat from Blaze Milano over a burgundy skirt by Edeline Lee and a matching turtleneck cashmere sweater by Kiltane, the look was accessorized with a burgundy top handle bag by Asprey. The Princess of Wales' new earrings almost went unnoticed underneath her signature long hair — and it seems they are a sartorial nod to her late mother-in-law.
After taking a closer look, it would seem that Kate, 43, was wearing a new pair of hoop earrings that not only complimented the understated luxury look but were also a nod to the late Princess Diana. The chic earrings are part of Cartier’s iconic Trinity range, of which Diana was also a fan.

Princess Diana wearing the Cartier Trinity ring at her home in Kensington PalaceIt’s not the first time Kate has worn pieces from the much-loved range, which features intertwined bands in 18-karat white, yellow and rose gold. In March 2017 Kate, who was then Duchess of Cambridge, wore an understated necklace from the Trinity collection on a royal engagement in Paris.
Five years prior, she wore a more lavish necklace set with diamonds and featuring a long gold chain to visit an Olympics exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in 2012. Kate wore the matching earrings in 2014 to attend a banquet at Kensington Palace to mark SportsAid’s 40th anniversary.
Diana was also a huge fan of Cartier, in particular the brand’s watches, but the former Princess of Wales also wore the Trinity ring (much like Grace Kelly did) on her little finger — and sales rocketed after she started to wear it regularly. Thought to symbolize love, fidelity and friendship, the collection celebrated its 100th anniversary last year with a star-studded campaign.

Catherine, Princess of Wales during a visit to The Royal Marsden Hospital on Jan. 14, 2025 in London, EnglandOn Jan. 14, Kate made an emotional visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital, where she had received treatment privately last year for an undisclosed form of cancer. During the visit, the comparisons to Princess Diana weren’t only style-related.
“I watched her talking to other patients, and she’s amazing,” patient Angela Terry, 71, told PEOPLE after she chatted with the royal.
“She has this gentle eye contact as she talks," Terry added. "She reaches out and maybe touches their shoulder or holds their hand, and her smile is always there. The level of connection she makes with each and every person she meets is phenomenal.”

Diana, famous for her empathetic bedside manner, was also a former president of the Royal Marsden, and during her time as a member of the royal family she became known for her empathy and care to those who were sick or vulnerable.
After Kate announced her cancer diagnosis in March of last year, she later said in September that “The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant, and we have to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”
After the royal took time to speak to so many patients last week, Terry said she was so impressed by Kate's “poise and elegance” and her ability to engage with and support others: “She was so open," Terry said. "She had this ‘We’re in this together’ approach, so I think people felt they were able to say all sorts of things, it was really heart-warming to watch.”
