- Members of the Kardashian and Jenner family have new iPhones delivered once a week to self-film footage for the next season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians from home during the coronavirus pandemic.
- Well-lit filming spaces were set up in Kim's and Khloé's homes to accommodate the at-home environment, and phone tripods were set up around the house.
- Executive producer Farnaz Farjam told ELLE.com that at least two full episodes of the upcoming season were filmed completely during quarantine.
How do you film a reality show during quarantine? The Kardashians had a simple solution: They just did it themselves.
In the midst of social distancing practices and stay-at-home orders, reality TV's most famous family ditched the usual camera crews to film new Keeping Up with the Kardashians content on their phones, over Zoom dinners, and at home with better lighting and more tripods. As a result, at least two episodes of the upcoming season consist entirely of self-filmed footage, executive producer Farnaz Farjam told ELLE.com in a new interview.
The process began with the Kardashians and Jenners uploading footage from their phones into a shared folder, but Farjam had an idea for an upgrade.
To break the continuity of the self-shot videos, she hired a director of photography and technician to set up well-lit sections of Kim's and Khloé's homes, and put up a number of "phone-friendly tripods" for confessionals. For safety precautions, the crew wore hazmat suits, the equipment was sanitized, and the stars waited a day after setup before reentering the configured rooms.
ELLE further reported based off Farjam's account, "Every Monday, a safely-masked showrunner drops off brand new iPhones to their security teams, and picks up the ones they’ve used to film themselves that week. There's usually around 16 hours of total footage, which is just enough for the show's editorial department to string together story lines."
It's unclear why new devices were distributed, rather than extra memory space. Perhaps it was due to cleanliness and health precautions?
The next season of KUWTK is going to feel different and "less fly-on-the-wall," Farjam explained, but it'll still be a "fun watch for people." It's the Kardashians, after all.
