  • Members of Senator Kamala Harris's family took to Twitter yesterday to celebrate the news that Harris had secured the nomination for vice president alongside presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

  • Harris's younger sister, Maya Harris, shared on Twitter that she believes their late mother would have been proud had she been alive to take in the history-making announcement.

Kamala Harris's family is rejoicing over the news that the California senator has been selected by Joe Biden as the official Democratic nominee for vice president.

The selection is a historic one. Choosing Harris as VP makes her the first Black woman and person of Indian descent to be nominated for national office by a major party, as well as only the fourth woman overall to be chosen for a presidential ticket.

Harris responded to the news of her nomination yesterday with a sincere tweet (and is expected to address the nation alongside Biden in their first public appearance together later today). Her family members did the same. Taking to social media to celebrate her feat, they reveled in what is easily a career-defining moment for the senator.

"That day when a little girl from Oaktown became the first black woman to be a major-party vice-presidential nominee...," wrote the senator's younger sister, Maya Harris, alongside two photos of her sibling. "So incredibly proud of you, sis!"

Maya Harris also shared a sweet anecdote, revealing how proud their mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, would have been had she been around to witness this moment.

"You can't know who @KamalaHarris is without knowing who our mother was. Missing her terribly, but know she and the ancestors are smiling today. #BidenHarris2020," she wrote next to video clip of the senator reminiscing about the values their mother had taught her.

Meena Harris, Senator Harris's niece who's also the founder and CEO of Phenomenal, shared sentimental insight into how her family was taking in the big news as well.

"Pretty awesome and emotional explaining to my 4 year old daughter, with my mom, what just happened," wrote Meena on Twitter. "Made dinner for my family tonight, and feeling a certain joy I realize I haven’t felt in a long time since this all started. Going to hold on to this moment."
