She made history when she became the first female, first Black and first Asian-American vice president of the United States earlier this week.

The 56-year-old politician – who was sworn in at the Capitol in Washington D.C on Wednesday – has been praised for her effortlessly glamorous purple coat and dress ensemble, by American designer Christopher John Rogers.

However, it’s clear she has long exuded style – if her university portrait is anything to go by.

Back in August, Harris shared a photo to Instagram from her 1986 graduation day at Howard University.

In the throwback snap, the vice president can be seen wearing a classic black graduation gown, along with pearl earrings and a matching single-string necklace.

As an undergraduate, Harris was a member of a sorority whose founders were known as the ‘Twenty Pearls’.

At this week’s inauguration she opted for similar jewellery by New York designer Wilfredo Rosado, who is – like her – the child of immigrants.

Captioning her graduation photo, Harris wrote: “Whether it’s your first day of school at @howard1867 or your senior year, capture this moment. Hold it in your heart.

“This school year may look a little different but know your Bison family will be with you every step of this journey to help you succeed.”

The post has received more than 294,000 ‘likes’ to date, with thousands of messages of congratulations on her new role.

Harris began her degree in political science and economics at the institution in 1982.

After graduating, she went on to study law at the University of California.

On inauguration day, her alma mater shared an open letter on its website, addressed to the university community, which read: “This is a great day for Harris, for Howard and for our country as a whole.

“It is a great day for the African-American community, the South Asian community and all American communities."

Harris has become known as one of the more fashionable players in American politics.

She recently appeared on the cover of US Vogue in a pair of her signature Converse trainers.
