Kamala Harris 'Is Brat,' Says Singer Charli xcx: Explaining Why Yes, That's a Compliment
After the 'Club Classics' singer's post on X June 21, Harris' official campaign account on X changed its banner to mimic the style of Charli xcx's album, "brat"
Charli xcx has declared that Kamala Harris is having a "brat summer" — and the vice president's newly launched presidential campaign appears to agree.
On Sunday, June 21, shortly after Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and announced that he was giving his "full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee for our party this year," the "Everything is romantic" singer, 31, appeared to do the same.
"kamala [sic] IS brat," Charli xcx wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, referring to the title of her latest album, which was released on Friday, June 7.
Soon after the post, Harris' official campaign account on X changed its banner to mimic the style of "brat." At the time of this writing, the banner reads "kamala hq" in lowercase black lettering with a lime green background.
But what does it mean to be a "brat?" Charli xcx explained in her own words in a video on TikTok.
"You're just like that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes. Who feels herself but maybe also has a breakdown. But kind of like parties through it, is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile. Like does dumb things. But it's brat. You're brat. That's brat," she said.
After the English singer's declaration, edits of Harris, 59, exploded on the internet, with some of her most popular quotes and clips being spliced together and set to Charli xcx songs. Sometimes the videos are tinted in the lime green hue of the "brat" cover, or the cover itself pops up in between clips of Harris.

On X Sunday, writer Zoe Rose Bryant reshared one such video edit, set to Charli xcx's song, "Von Dutch."
"It's time to exist in the context of all in which we live and what came before us America," she captioned her post.

The caption is a reference to Harris once quoting her mother in a speech. "You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?" she laughed. "You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you."
Another popular quote used in the videos is Harris telling Biden, 81, "We did it, Joe" after he was elected president in 2020, making her the first female vice president in American history.
