And Just Like That: Cynthia Nixon Explains Che Diaz’s Exit, Teases a Newly Single Miranda in Season 3

Sara Ramírez won’t be back as Che Diaz on And Just Like That… next season, and series star Cynthia Nixon is opening up about why.

Nixon, who plays Miranda on Max’s Sex and the City continuation, tells our sister site Variety that Ramírez’s exit was a mutual decision between Ramírez and showrunner Michael Patrick King. Ramírez “created such an amazing character — such a controversial character, but such an amazing character,” Nixon says, but “I think they felt, and Michael Patrick felt, that that character had run its course. They came in and shook everything up, and then the arc was completed.”

Ramírez co-starred in And Just Like That’s first two seasons as non-binary stand-up comic Che Diaz, who struck up a romance with Miranda that led to the breakup of Miranda’s marriage to Steve. The romance fizzled in Season 2, though, after Che’s dream of starring in a TV sitcom came crashing down. (Click here for TVLine’s chat with Ramírez about Che and Miranda’s split.) Ramírez’s exit was first reported in February.

Heading into Season 3 (slated to premiere next year on Max), Miranda is single for the first time in decades, and we’ll see her explore that in the new episodes, Nixon hints: “I do feel like our show always works best when people are dating.”
