'Just Ashes' Remain of Cape Town Restaurant Gutted by Fire

Table Mountain National Park confirmed that the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant & Tea Garden had burned down in a major fire that started on Sunday, April 18.

This video, taken by John Finch on April 19, shows the charred remains of the popular restaurant. The sudden nature of the evacuation is demonstrated by one table, shown with charred plates and cutlery still on it.

“The tearoom has been completely, completely gutted by fire. Not much left of a very well known and famous tea room,” Finch can be heard saying as he explores the rubble.

The fire started on Sunday and reached the University of Cape Town, where students were evacuated and a library building was destroyed.
