Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is set to reject an interview from BBC Match of the Day to show his support for the programme’s host Gary Lineker, according to reports.

The BBC have told Lineker he must step back from presenting Match of the Day until a resolution is found over an impartiality row. On Twitter, he compared a controversial government asylum policy to one which would have been in place in Germany in the 1930s.

The BBC say the former England striker’s social media activity breaches their guidelines. While they do not ask for his social media to be an ‘opinion-free zone’, they do not want him to take sides on party political issues.

Following news that Lineker would not be hosting Match of the Day on Saturday, his fellow pundits Ian Wright and Alan Shearer said they would not appear on the show in solidarity.

After being rejected by several other hosts and pundits, the BBC have decided Match of the Day will air without a presenter, pundits or its normal commentators this weekend.

And Match of the Day’s coverage will become even less extensive after it emerged that Klopp will refuse to speak with them following Liverpool’s match against Bournemouth.

Newsnight journalist Emily Maitlis broke the news by tweeting: ‘Jurgen Klopp may refuse to comment to BBC Match of the Day later today in solidarity with Lineker. Likely to offer his message through other broadcasters.’

The Daily Mirror have also provided their information on the situation. They reveal that Premier League players want to show solidarity with the 62-year-old as well. They have contacted the Professional Footballer’s Association and revealed they could boycott interviews with the BBC. The PFA will support the players’ decision, should they go through with this plan.
