Jurgen Klopp is said to be extremely interested in being involved in the project at another Premier League club when he leaves Liverpool.
The 55-year-old has been with the Reds since 2015 and overseen a successful period for the Merseysiders. The German tactician guided them to their first Premier League title in 2019-2020. And he also lifted the Champions League trophy in 2019 and has reached two further finals in Europe’s elite club competition.
Add to that an FA Cup and EFL Cup triumph and it is no wonder that the former Borussia Dortmund chief is revered at Anfield.
The north-west giants were pipped to the Premier League title by Manchester City last term. And they have struggled to rediscover their touch in 2022-2023.
Heading into the World Cup, Liverpool sat sixth in the table, with 22 points from 14 games played.
There is still time for them to reach the top four. But a title challenge is now out of the picture. And there have been rumblings about Klopp’s future after so long at the helm.
The recent news that owners FSG are looking to sell the club has only added to the speculation.
And it has now been reported by Football Insider that a source has told them Klopp is ‘obsessed by Newcastle’.
The Magpies are currently flying and sit in third spot in the Premier League table.
Eddie Howe has done a superb job at St James’ Park, first in staving off relegation, then guiding them up the standings.
And with Saudi money in the coffers, it appears the sky is the limit on Tyneside.
Klopp the next step for Newcastle
Klopp is under contract with Liverpool until the summer of 2026. Despite rumours, the charismatic coach has continually pledged his future to his present employers.
But every manager has his tipping point and it remains to be seen if he stays another four years.
Newcastle’s upturn in fortunes has been attributed to an injection of cash and astute recruitment by Howe and his backroom team.
With a minimum of fuss, they are now in contention to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
And that is after flirting with relegation for a large part of last season.
Howe was not everyone’s choice to succeed Steve Bruce. But he has proved that his success in leading Bournemouth in the Premier League was no flash in the pan.
However, Newcastle’s ambitious owners are likely to look for a big-name manager to continue the project – and Klopp fits the bill.
There is nothing to suggest that Howe will be jettisoned in the near future. Indeed it would be folly to disrupt the current flow of the club.
The players are all singing from the same hymn sheet and they are easy on the eye.
The Englishman will be given time but silverware is a must if he is to stay in the job long term.
Klopp’s experience of winning trophies and mixing it with the big boys of Europe makes him an ideal candidate for the job.
But he still has plenty of work to do at Liverpool. And fans should not expect his departure any time soon.
