Jurgen Klopp given sublime opportunity to land world-class star for Liverpool as Euro giants forced into shock sale stance
Liverpool could achieve a game-changing midfield capture in 2023 after one of Europe’s biggest clubs were handed bad news over a new contract.
Liverpool have completed just one new signing in the January transfer window. Dutch forward Cody Gakpo has arrived from PSV Eindhoven on a five-and-a-half-year contract. According to Sky Sports, Liverpool will pay PSV between £35million and £45m for the World Cup goalscorer.
The Reds are unlikely to make any more January signings though as they are saving their money for a big midfield arrival at the end of the season.
They need to give the position a major boost following injuries to the likes of Arthur Melo, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Plus, starting options Jordan Henderson and Thiago are not getting any younger.
Jude Bellingham is Jurgen Klopp’s ideal new arrival. And on Tuesday, a Sky Sports journalist explained why Anfield is Bellingham’s likely destination this summer.
However, Real Madrid are always lurking. They have the funds to beat Liverpool in the race for the influential Englishman.
As such, Liverpool recruitment chiefs are scouring Europe for alternative midfield signings. And they have been handed a great opportunity to snare one of Spain’s most exciting players.
The man in question is Barcelona star Gavi. The La Liga leaders had been hoping to announce his new contract soon. It includes a massive €1billion (£880m) release clause.
Barcelona unable to complete major new contracts
Barca announced they had reached an agreement with Gavi on the deal in September. They hoped it would go through soon after that.
However, Spanish newspaper Marca report that Barca are unable to register his fresh terms. Ronaldo Araujo, Alejandro Balde and Inaki Pena’s new contracts have been rejected, too.
La Liga chiefs are not satisfied that Barca have met the necessary financial regulations in order to complete those new contracts. That is despite Xavi’s team offloading Memphis Depay and Gerard Pique in the hope this would create enough funds.
Due to La Liga’s decision, Barca must now go back to the drawing board and come up with more ways to save money. For the time being, Gavi’s contract still expires in summer 2026 and he will have to continue wearing the number 30 shirt, having been promised the number six jersey.
Most importantly for Liverpool, who have been eyeing Gavi for some time, is the fact that the 18-year-old’s release clause remains at just €50m (£44m).
Star could move to Liverpool for £44m
Therefore, if Barca cannot reward Gavi with a lucrative new contract soon, then he may consider leaving the Nou Camp on a cut-price deal. And with Klopp a huge fan of the Spain international, this could see him move to Liverpool.
Gavi would be a fantastic signing for Klopp. He is one of the best young players in the world. Plus, he won the Kopa Trophy ahead of Eduardo Camavinga and Jamal Musiala last year.
Submitting a £44m bid for Gavi would be a no brainer. He would help to transform the Liverpool midfield, while his transfer value would soar as well.
Then, should Barca ever acquire the funds to re-sign him, Liverpool could make a colossal profit when allowing him to go back to Spain.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will have to fend off Manchester United and Arsenal in the chase for a deadly Serie A forward.
