Jurassic World: Chaos Theory is back for season 2 — and so is Brooklynn!

PEOPLE recently spoke with Kiersten Kelly, the actress voicing the character, who was presumed dead by her friends and family after a tragic dinosaur attack in season 1.

Brooklynn survives but has her arm amputated as a result, thus reintroducing her as the first character in the Jurassic universe to have a limb difference.

Kelly, who was born without her right forearm, was joined in her PEOPLE interview by Jurassic World: Chaos Theory writer Peter Lee, an amputee, along with showrunner Scott Kreamer to highlight National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October.

Lee says that people with disabilities make up “as many as a quarter of the general population” — “and we have a lot to offer.”

“Historically we've been limited in terms of opportunity," he says. "And so a show like this is truly breaking barriers and giving us opportunities that have been seldom forthcoming in the past.”

Kreamer adds: “When we made the decision to tell a story featuring Brooklyn, one of our lead characters acquiring a limb difference, we wanted to tell that story authentically.”

Kelly echoes that.

“I think being a part of the show and having authentic representation within the show as well just showcases how much your projects and society can benefit from equal opportunity and including people with disabilities,” she says.

The changes Kelly's character faces ties into the upcoming storyline, too.

“It raises the stakes," Kreamer says. "It explains why people would've thought she was dead. And it gives us an opportunity to give visibility and representation to a vastly underrepresented community. So that's kind of how it came about.”

“I love Brooklynn so much” because “her disability doesn't define her,” Kelly tells PEOPLE. “And it's not her entire story. She is a very complex person and there's a lot of depth, and she’s becoming an adult and she's living on this island, and she's trying to navigate who she wants to be.”

“And I think that's amazing, especially in a series regular, because you don't see disability representation," she continues.

"To have a character that is not solely defined by their disability is just another step forward toward normalizing disabilities in media, which I just love so much," she syas. "So I'm really excited for people to see this."

An official synopsis states that the second season picks up “six years after the events at Camp Cretaceous” and sees the main characters "reunited" but "on the run and catapulted into a global adventure to unravel a conspiracy that threatens dinosaur and humankind alike and finally learn the truth about what happened to one of their own."

In a clip for season 2 of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, fans see Brooklynn camping out in an uninhabited apartment building which sits across from who she suspects to be a dinosaur broker responsible for her near-fatal season 1 attack.

After learning the broker’s daily routine, Brooklynn plans to break in while the broker is away to find out who is responsible for the ambush and why.

The rest of the kids end up in Senegal, Africa, working together to uncover the truth behind Brooklyn’s disappearance — which eventually leads them to even greater mysteries.

And dinosaurs aren’t the only dangers in Senegal: The gang soon discovers that lions, hippos and more lurk in that jungle’s shadows.

In addition to Kelly, Paul-Mikél Williams (Darius), Sean Giambrone (Ben), Darren Barnet (Kenji), Raini Rodriguez (Sammy), Kausar Mohammed (Yasmina), Anaiya Asomugha (Zayna) also star in the animated series executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Colin Trevorrow and Frank Marshall.

“The whole franchise is built on wonder, terror, humor and action," Kreamer, the showrunner, tells PEOPLE. "There's so many of those things. And we try to honor all of that. We are a little part of this giant franchise, which also means so much to so many people.”

Season 2 of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory is streaming now on Netflix.
