Julian Nagelsmann to Tottenham: Appointment very much on as former Man Utd boss delivers tantalising update to Levy
Tottenham have been informed that a move to appoint Julian Nagelsmann as their new manager remains a very strong and “exciting” possibility.
The North London side are currently seeking another new boss after what has been something of a disastrous campaign. Interim manager Cristian Stellini was quickly sent on his way following an embarassing 6-1 defeat at Newcastle last time out. Stepping in for his former boss, Antonio Conte, Stellini’s stint at the helm was to last just 28 days.
The club has also recently lost sporting director Fabio Paratici after his suspension from the game was upheld due to his part in a series of alleged transfer irregularities at previous club Juventus.
And with the club also in serious danger of missing out on the Champions League, filling the Tottenham vacancy has now become a far harder task than initially expected.
Still chairman Daniel Levy continues to target some of the game’s biggest names. Indeed, in the immediate aftermath of Conte’s dismissal, the club were very quickly linked with a move for former Bayern coach Nagelsmann.
However, amid doubts over the direction Spurs are heading, he was reported to have initially turned down an approach.
He has since been overlooked for the Chelsea job; that position will almost certainly now be filled by former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.
And with the pressure mounting on Levy to find a top-class replacement, hopes for Nagelsmann have this week dramatically improved.
Indeed, reports are growing that he could actually be tempted to take up the role if Levy agrees to a major double climbdown.
Tottenham told how they can appoint Nagelsmann as manager
Now their chances have been talked up even more by former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
The Austrian knows Nagelsmann well from their time at RB Leipzig together. And he thinks the 35-year-old could yet be lured to N17.
Discussing their chances, Rangnick is adamant that Spurs remain a huge attraction to the game’s top coaches.
“I think Tottenham are an exciting club in many ways,” he told Sky Deutschland. “They probably have one of the most modern, beautiful stadiums in the world at the moment. They have one of the best training centres that is there at the moment and Daniel Levy, who has been leading the club for many, many years.”
However, Rangnick fears the lack of a sporting director could prove problematic for Tottenham. And if they are serious about landing Nagelsmann, they may need to plan for Paratici’s replacement.
“If Tottenham really want him, then I think it would be important if a sporting director was still there to support him,” Rangnick explained.
“This can be a very, very exciting story!
“There’s room for improvement, a lot of room for improvement. And it’s not a club where they expect you to finish in the top one, two or three right away.”
Nagelsmann, understandably, remains Tottenham’s top choice to fill their vacancy. And they would be landing an outstanding young coach if they can his appointment over the line.
Failure to land him, though, could see Levy potentially turning to other candidates with Arne Slot’s name again recently being mentioned. And surprise reports on Thursday are also touting a fresh move for a former Chelsea boss too.
