Jude Law Just Ruined 'The Holiday'
"Sorry."
Released in 2006, The Holiday has become an essential rewatch for fans invested in Amanda and Graham’s unlikely cross-Atlantic romance. Set in a very Nancy Meyers-esque English backdrop, Cameron Diaz and Jude Law fall in love in Iris’s gloriously quaint Rosehill Cottage, which has since spawned countless Airbnb imitations. However, Law unapologetically “burst the bubble” for fans when he was asked about the iconic English cabin during a recent interview.
Rosehill Cottage, where Amanda stays when Iris (played by Kate Winslet) vacations at her Los Angeles mansion, is the epitome of cottagecore, with cozy florals, a rustic stone fireplace, and mismatched shabby-chic furnishings. Like so many others, the hosts of The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC’s Radio 2 revealed that they’d always dreamed of staying in the cozy home during a Nov. 22 interview with Law—but he had some bad news for them.
“That cottage doesn’t exist,” Law told them, adding “Oh, yeah,” as he took in their horrified expressions. He then explained that the Rosehill Cottage that viewers saw on their screen really only existed in Nancy Meyers’s imagination.
“So the director, she’s a bit of a perfectionist,” Law said. “She toured that whole area and didn’t quite find the chocolate box cottage she’s looking for. So she just hired a field and drew it and had someone build it.”
In addition to crushing fans’ hopes for a real-life The Holiday experience, he also revealed that the interior Rosehill Cottage scenes weren’t even filmed in the U.K.
“But here’s the funny thing, if you watch it,” he continued. “So we were shooting it in winter here [in Britain], and every time I’d go in that door, we cut and we shot the interiors in L.A. about three months later.”
As the shocking hosts told him they couldn’t “bear” the revelations, Law quipped, “Just burst the bubble. Sorry!”
While Rosehill Cottage might not exist in real life, there’s some good news for fans. Meyers’ vision was reportedly inspired by Honeysuckle Cottage, which is located in Surrey Hills. The charming property was previously available to rent on Airbnb, so there’s always a chance that viewers can live out Cameron Diaz and Jude Law’s timeless romance in real life in the future.
