At least 76 people were arrested in downtown Los Angeles, California, when celebrations of the Lakers’ NBA championship win devolved into confrontations with police on October 11, according to reports.
Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement it intervened when the “largely peaceful celebration” turned “violent and destructive”.
Local journalist Samuel Braslow, who likened parts of the downtown Los Angeles to a “block party”, was covering the events when police in riot gear began forcefully clearing the streets.
This footage, shot by Braslow and compiled by Storyful, captures the moment his phone blocked a projectile fired at him by an officer.
“Police aimed at me,” he wrote on Twitter. “Less lethal round literally hits my phone out of my hands (credit to apple, it kept recording).”
The footage also shows a firework exploding before a row of police and revellers performing doughnuts in a Dodge Charger.
