Josh Brolin Says He's Only Let Two People Read His Upcoming Memoir: 'Raked Me Over the Coals'

The actor told 'Cigar Aficionado' that one of his early readers was director Ethan Coen

Josh Brolin hasn't let too many people read his forthcoming memoir — but he's been open to their feedback.

The Dune: Part Two actor, 56, who back in April exclusively shared the cover of his book From Under the Truck with PEOPLE ahead of its fall release, spoke with Cigar Aficionado for the magazine's August cover, which hits newsstands on July 16.

In it, he revealed that only two people have had the chance to read the memoir so far. “I’ve let only two people read my book, Ethan Coen’s one of them," Brolin said of the director, who he has worked with on films including No Country for Old Men and True Grit.

"And he basically raked me over the coals — in a good way and a tough way, but in a good way.”

The forthcoming book from Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins, has been billed as an “un-celebrity memoir,” in which Brolin explores his “unconventional” childhood in Paso Robles, Calif., his many film roles starting with 1985's The Goonies, and his experiences with fatherhood, addiction, relationships and love.

"Grappling with the mysteries of life and death in a way that will catch readers by surprise, From Under the Truck is an audacious and riveting memoir from a born writer," the book's publisher notes.

The actor previously published his poetry and photography book Dune: Exposures with Insight Editions in February, when he gave Dune fans some extra insight into his work as Warmaster Gurney Halleck in the franchise.

The book incorporates images from Director of Photography Greig Fraser and poems from Brolin, in what the publisher has called a "moving and interior chronicle of a fleetingly rare creative bond shared by two practitioners at the heights of their respective crafts."

As for Brolin's relationship with Coen — one of only two people who've read his next release — the pair first worked together back in 2007 when Brolin played Llewelyn Moss in the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men. He last appeared in the pair's 2016 film Hail, Caesar! as Eddie Mannix.

"I just really enjoy their sensibility, I get it," Brolin told The Independent of Ethan and Joel Coen in 2016. "I don’t know why. You wouldn’t think, because we come from extremely different backgrounds, and charismatically we come from very different backgrounds. But I think, I just get it. What they chuckle at makes me chuckle."

"Also, there’s almost a mentorship in our relationship because they see in me the ability to play things, so they trust me to find my way through a role, that I wouldn’t necessarily pick for myself," he later added. "It’s fun to create with them. I feel like all of us are on the ground with a lot of play-doh."

From Under the Truck comes out on Nov. 19 and is available now for preorder, wherever books are sold.
