Jordanian creates handbags out of orange peels

This luxury handbag is made of orange peel

Food artist and molecular gastronomist Omar Sartawi designed the bag

with the aim to create environmentally friendly luxury products

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) JORDANIAN FOOD ARTIST, OMAR SARTAWI, SAYING:"I buy oranges from here. I take its peel and start processing it through different stages. It takes around two weeks to make the material workable like this. Later on, I take it to what we call 'digital fabrication,' to come up with the design we want and cut it using a laser, we flatten the material so we won't face any problems with its surface."

He has also designed face masks and tents out of aubergine leather

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) JORDANIAN FOOD ARTIST, OMAR SARTAWI, SAYING:"One of the things I am currently working on is processing the leather of fruits and vegetables in new ways, to be used as environmentally friendly material, to turn it into luxury brands. We can create extravagant products with modern designs through available technologies. I am using it in fashion, accessories, high-end bags, and furniture."
