Jordan plant shop raises money for people with disabilities

This plant shop is raising money for people with disabilities

Location: Amman, Jordan

Anas Damra set up ‘Fasila’ to help his sister Islam

who has Down’s Syndrome and wasn’t able to find employment

The money they make from potting and selling plants

will go towards establishing a specialized center

where people with disabilities can receive vocational training

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) ISLAM'S BROTHER AND FASILA COFOUNDER, ANAS DAMRA, SAYING:

"When we say rehabilitation and the development of skills, we are talking about vocational training. This service is almost unavailable in Jordan for people with disabilities who are older than 16. There are a very limited number of centers that work on rehabilitation and capacity building but the challenges are in the quality of the service and its cost. One of the vocational training centres asked for $4,500 per month as fees."

Anas says his sister didn’t have much to do prior to joining Fasila

But it’s a very different story now

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) FASILA COFOUNDER WHO HAS DOWN SYNDROME, ISLAM DAMRA, SAYING:

"I like plants, I like planting them, I really like this work."
