Man Utd target Frenkie de Jong could inch closer to resolving his future today as he’s set to hold another meeting with Barcelona, according to reports.
The Red Devils have been pursuing De Jong for over two months now with the Premier League side and Barca reportedly agreeing an €85m deal for the midfielder.
It has been rumoured that deferred salary and bonuses owed to De Jong from during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic could be holding up the issue, while other reports have claimed that he wants to stay at Barcelona and has no interest in a move to Man Utd.
One report on Monday insisted that De Jong was ready to take an almost 50 per cent pay cut to remain at Barcelona this summer with the funds generated used to register other players.
It comes a day after Barcelona president Joan Laporta insisted that the Catalan giants had not accepted any bids for the Netherlands international.
“Frenkie de Jong is our player, we really like him.” Laporta told ESPN. “We received some offers for Frenkie but we didn’t accept as of now, as we want to talk with him and know exactly what he wants. We need to clarify some aspects of his situation.”
And now Spanish newspaper Sport claim that the ‘most important folder in the mission to lighten the wage bill is, without a doubt, the one with a Frenkie de Jong name tag on it’.
They touch on interest from Man Utd and Chelsea and add that in ‘the next few hours, Barça plans to hold a summit with De Jong to order and untangle their situation’.
Barcelona intend ‘to solve’ the ‘soap opera as soon as possible’ with the new La Liga season getting closer and closer.
Sport continues: ‘The only thing that is clear now is that something must change, as the club will not be able to afford its high salaries and incorporate the new signings at the same time.’
De Jong has played in central defence, rather than midfield, in their last two pre-season friendlies but Barcelona boss Xavi has insisted he wasn’t try to send the Man Utd target a message.
