Jonathan Scott Says If He Met Zooey Deschanel 20 Years Earlier He’s Not Sure They’d Be Together

"You don’t know when you’re young what you want. And we got to a point where we know what we want and it’s each other," he said on 'Today with Hoda & Jenna'

Jonathan Scott is a big believer in the “right place at the right time” expression.

On Thursday, the Property Brothers star and his brother Drew appeared on Today with Hoda & Jenna. Jonathan opened up about his relationship with fiancée Zooey Deschanel.

After congratulating Jonathan on his engagement, Kotb spoke of a moment that they shared behind the scenes.

“You know what I love about you? You said before the segment…if you two had met 20 years ago, you’re not sure you two would be together,” she recounted of his conversation about his partner of four years.

Jonathan’s response leaned into his outlook on fate.

“Well no, I mean, sometimes I think you go through your whole life — that’s why I like, when [you were] talking about the Golden Bachelor earlier. You don’t know when you’re young what you want,” he said. “And we got to a point where we know what we want and it’s each other. And it’s been the most incredible experience to actually feel that love bounce right back at you.”

Drew then chimed in with a joke about the ABC show featuring a Bachelor star in his 70s.

“They wanted Jonathan to be the Golden Bachelor and then Zooey got in the way!” he joked to which Jonathan responded, “Twice! I got asked twice to be the Bachelor and I was like, ‘I’m not your guy.’”

As for wedding planning, Bush Hager asked if Drew is throwing a bachelor party to celebrate his brother’s upcoming nuptials. “You better be!” Jonathan quipped.

“As soon as I know the details of when things are happening, I already have some things in the works. Yeah, so, our other brother J.D., as well. He and me are going to do some good things,” Drew added.

After four years of dating, Scott popped the question during a family trip to Scotland in August. Deschanel's two children — daughter Elsie, 8, and son Charlie, 6 — played a role in the special moment. Everyone was overjoyed and Deschanel, of course, said "Yes!"

In October, the pair opened up about their engagement and relationship in a PEOPLE cover story.

“When we first started dating, Zooey posted a picture of us together.  It might've been the very first time we ever posted anything on social media. And I remember I looked at it and I saw the first comment right below was, ‘Why the hell is she with a Property Brother?!’ I was like, ‘Excuse me—rude!'" Scott told PEOPLE with mock indignation.

“Why wouldn’t I be with you?” Deschanel chimed in. “Our personalities are so compatible. It’s just that we’re from different worlds.”

The pair, who chatted with PEOPLE at their new home in Los Angeles, in their first interview since their surprise engagement, said there’s another reason why they work: “We identify as nerds, we’ll have you know,” Deschanel added.
