"How can a 1949 film about a Victorian serial murderer be so uplifting?" asks Lisa. "The elegance of the witty script certainly helps, never once faltering on its tightrope between macabre and mischievous. The acting’s pretty wonderful too: not only Alec Guinness’s deft turn as eight characters, including a ferocious suffragette, but Joan Greenwood as purring siren, Sibella, and Valerie Hobson as the film’s much needed moral compass. All this and spectacular costumes (Sibella’s hats are a cameo in their own right) make this a joyous diversion, especially in its remastered 70th birthday edition."
