Johor police nab ‘WeChat’ drug dealer, seize over RM360,000 in narcotics

JOHOR BARU, Dec 21 — A 28-year-old man suspected of selling drugs through the WeChat messaging application has been arrested by the police here who also seized illicit narcotics valued at RM371,075.

Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the man was caught at 12.15am yesterday in the city.

“The screening revealed that the suspect also tested positive for drugs, in addition to having a previous conviction for drug abuse.

“The suspect’s modus operandi was to advertise the prohibited substances using the WeChat chat application before delivering the drugs.

“The drugs were stored in a Proton Saga car in which they were then delivered to customers around the city here,” Raub said in a statement today.

Based on preliminary investigations, Raub said police learnt that the suspect had been actively dealing since last October.

He added that during the arrest, police also seized 6.85kg of powdered Ecstasy, 145 Ecstasy pills and 74g of ketamine, or the equivalent of 35,975 doses with a street value of RM371,075.

Police also seized a vehicle used by the suspect worth RM15,000 and RM400 in cash, leading to a total seizure value of RM386,475.

Raub said the man has been remanded for seven days starting today.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction.
