Johor MB: Johor Bahru Has Over 70,000 Vacant Homes

Johor Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad said over 70,000 homes in Johor Bahru are vacant since they are either unsold, unoccupied or abandoned.

He attributed the problem partly to the new policies on homeownership as well as on the new conditions that would have to be complied with by foreigners under the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, reported Bernama.

Hasni revealed that the state government is working with real estate firms to introduce a housing rent programme aimed at the younger generation.

“We will discuss and cooperate with real estate agents who have the record of completed and unsold houses, the types of units and appropriate rent,” he said as quoted by Bernama.

He noted that the problem of vacant homes should be resolved for Johor Bahru to be a dynamic city.

Hasni revealed that the state’s 2022 budget, which is set to be tabled on 25 November, will focus on the M40 (middle income) and B40 (lower income) groups as well as on young people who are struggling to find employment.

He explained that an expansionary approach has to be adopted by the state to rehabilitate economic sectors that have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He added that the budget will also seek ways to help individuals conducting online businesses at their homes.

“Many are interested in starting an online business to supplement their income in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The economy has not fully recovered so the government needs to help,” said Hasni.
