The John Wick franchise is about to get bigger with John Wick 4 in production, but the film already had a chunk of footage before filming even began.

Director Chad Stahelski has revealed he shot so much for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum that instead of slotting it all into a director's cut, he's saving it for the next instalment.

"I like thematics," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

"Obviously, you can see the influences of the old Westerns and the old Samurai films. All the Arthurian tales for chivalry and all that kind of stuff, back to that.

"We had a couple of overlapping thematics, and I stripped it down to the bare essentials. And there were two action sequences that we had really kind of conceived, but we just didn't have room for them.

"So, we pulled them from the movie. And I'd like to think that 90 per cent of what I pulled, there's a place in John Wick 4 that I can definitely reinsert them."

Recently, the franchise's co-creator and screenwriter Derek Kolstad revealed the reason the films are named after the lead character – and it isn't because they couldn't think up a different title.

"The only reason it's called John Wick is that Keanu kept referring to it as John Wick," Kolstad explained.

He explained that it was originally set to be called Scorn but star Keanu Reeves kept getting the name wrong, so the studio decided to go with it.

John Wick is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, while John Wick Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum are available to purchase on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD now.
