John Lennon and Paul McCartney's sons come together to release new song 'Primrose Hill'
James McCartney explained that the idea for the dreamy track came after he "had a vision as a child in Scotland."
Lennon-McCartney have collaborated on a new song together — just not in the way you'd expect.
Sean Ono Lennon and James McCartney, the sons of Beatles members John Lennon and Paul McCartney, have teamed up to release their very first single together titled "Primrose Hill." The dreamy track, which lists Sean and James as both writers and composers, describes the experience of falling in love with someone while visiting the beloved North London park.
“‘Primrose Hill’ is here! Today I am so very excited to share my latest song co-written by my good friend @sean_ono_lennon,” James wrote on Instagram alongside a snapshot of him and Sean. “With the release of this song, it feels like we’re really getting the ball rolling and I am so excited to continue to share music with you.”
The musician, who is the son of Paul and Linda McCartney, revealed in a previous Instagram post that track was inspired by an otherworldly experience that he'd had as a child.
“I had a vision as a child in Scotland, on what was a lovely summers day,” he explained. “Letting go, I saw my true love and saviour in my mind’s eye. ‘Primrose Hill’ is about getting the ball rolling with me & finding this person.”
His dad is also a huge fan of the collaboration. “My son James has a new song out called 'Primrose Hill' - check it out!" Paul wrote on his Facebook page. "And lots of love to Sean Ono Lennon who co-wrote the song.”
James began his music career by playing guitar on Paul's 1997 album Flaming Pie and Linda's 1998 album, Wild Prairie. He also co-wrote the songs "Spinning on an Axis" and "Back in the Sunshine Again" and played guitar on Paul's 2001 album, Driving Rain. He has also released two albums as a solo artist: 2013's Me and 2016's The Blackberry Train.
A musician and producer, Sean, the son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, has released music as both a solo artist and as a member of several bands, including the his parents’ Plastic Ono Band. He released his latest solo album, titled Asterisms, just last month.
Sean and James’ collaboration comes after the Beatles released their final song, “Now and Then,” last November. Perhaps Sean and James can get George Harrison's son Dhani and Ringo Starr's son Zak to join them on the next track?
For now, listen to "Primrose Hill" above.
