John David Washington to Headline Gareth Edwards’ New Sci-Fi Movie ‘True Love’

After headlining last summer’s time-bending thriller “Tenet,” John David Washington is getting back in the sci-fi game, signing on to star in director Gareth Edwards’ upcoming film for New Regency.

Titled “True Love,” the new movie is a sci-fi story, set in the near future. Additional plot details, however, are currently undisclosed.

News of the project first broke in Feb. 2020, with New Regency on board to produce and finance the film. Edwards will also produce “True Love,” reuniting with “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” producer Kiri Hart for the new project.

“True Love” will be Edwards’ fourth feature. After breaking onto the scene with his critically acclaimed directorial debut “Monsters” in 2010, Edwards helmed “Godzilla” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” The pair of big budget blockbusters earned a combined $1.5 billion at the box office.

Washington is on quite the big-screen run himself, after starring opposite Zendaya in “Malcolm and Marie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet.” For his performance in Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman,” the actor earned Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations. Washington recently completed work on the New Regency’s upcoming film from director David O. Russell, with an ensemble that includes Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, Robert De Niro, Mike Myers, Chris Rock and more.

New Regency’s upcoming slate of films also includes Adrian Lyne’s “Deep Water,” starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, the film adaptation of the musical “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie,” as well as Robert Eggers’ “The Northman,” starring Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman and Willem Dafoe. The company is also developing a new “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” series with stars Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Amazon; the British drama series “The Beast Must Die” and “The Crowded Room” starring Tom Holland for Apple TV plus.

Washington is represented by WME. Edwards is repped by WME, Curtis Brown, Range and Ziffren Law.

Deadline was first to report news of Washington’s casting.
