Saskatchewan Party MLA and former cabinet minister Joe Hargrave says he will not be seeking re-election this fall.

Hargrave has represented the Prince Albert Carlton constituency since 2016. He was also the minister responsible for SaskBuilds and procurement until Monday.

"My family and I have given this a lot of consideration and have decided I just can't commit to another four years as MLA," Hargrave said in a news release.

"I want to thank my family, friends and most importantly, the constituents of Prince Albert Carlton for your support over the past eight years," Hargrave's statement said.

"It has been an honour to serve you and to serve with Premier [Scott] Moe and all my caucus colleagues."

The Sask. Party said it will nominate a new candidate for Prince Albert Carlton in the coming weeks.

Hargrave is among more than a dozen sitting Sask. Party MLAs who are not running again in the next election. A provincial election must be held in Saskatchewan on or before Oct. 28, 2024.

New minister of SaskBuilds and procurement

Premier Moe appointed Terry Jenson to serve as minister of SaskBuilds and procurement on Monday to replace Hargrave.

"Joe has decided not to run again in this fall's election and has asked to step away from his ministerial role," Moe said in a news release.

"He has played a key role in helping advance some of the most significant capital projects we have seen in our province's history, and I thank him for his service and leadership."

Martensville-Warman MLA Terry Jenson made the announcement on behalf of Jeremy Harrison, minister of immigration and career training. He says the new change will help Saskatchewan reach a population of 1.4 million people and create 100,000 new jobs by the end of this decade.

Jenson is entering cabinet for the first time. He was elected as the MLA for Martensville-Warman in the 2020 provincial election.

The Saskatchewan government announced a few other cabinet changes on Monday.

Lori Carr is now the government House leader and Paul Merriman has been named the deputy House leader, according to a government of Saskatchewan news release.

Jeremy Harrison stepped down as government House leader last week, after admitting he took a gun into the provincial legislature building a decade ago.

He said he was on his way to go hunting when he stopped at the legislature and didn't want to leave his gun unattended in his vehicle.
