Dame Joan Collins has no regrets over abortion as baby 'would have been the death of my career'

Dame Joan Collins doesn't regret her abortion at the age of 26, saying she believes a baby would have brought about "the death of my career" at that time.

The 88-year-old acting veteran told Piers Morgan on his latest episode of Life Stories — due to air on Sunday night — that she stood by the decision she made more than six decades ago.

The procedure too place at a time when abortions were illegal in the UK, prior to the 1967 Abortion Act passing through Parliament.

When asked by Morgan if she had even "a tinge of regret", the Dynasty star said that she didn't.

She added: "Of course I hesitated but I realised that if I was going to have a child I was going to be able to bring the child up properly and I believed very strongly that I'm in charge of my body.

"I was a feminist before the word was heard and I shall do what I felt was right for me.

"It would have been wrong to have done that. It would have ruined my life."

Collins had the abortion during her engagement to Bonnie & Clyde actor Warren Beatty during the early part of the 1960s, revealing the story in her 1978 autobiography Past Imperfect.

She has been married five times and has three children — two with actor and singer Anthony Newley and a third with businessman Ron Kass.

During her interview with Morgan, Collins — who is celebrating 70 years in showbiz — also revealed why she looks so young as she nears her 90th birthday.

"Right now I wake up in the morning whenever I want to wake up," said the star.

She added: "I think part of it is genetic, I think part of it is luck, and I think part of it is a lot of make-up and taking care of your skin."
