In the age of the #shelfie, Jennifer Hudson loves trying new skincare as much as the next person. “I would say I’m modest,” she recently told Allure. “I don’t like to underdo it—I make sure I give [my skin] the care that it needs.” That means she’s often interchanging products in her routine, but her favorite night cream will never be replaced. And get this—it’s from the drugstore.
That’s right. Jennifer Hudson uses an affordable moisturizer, and it works. The beloved product in mention is the Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 MAX night cream. Hudson, who is a member of the brand’s Face Anything campaign to empower women, told Allure that the little jar of magic always delivers.
“What I love about it is the consistency it gives me,” she explained. “It’s a common denominator for me. I go through so many different products … so to have Olay retinol, one consistent thing that I can do myself, that creates balance for me.”
Retinol is a tried-and-true ingredient for many due to its anti-aging abilities. Next to sunscreen, it’s arguably the most powerful ingredient you can use to prevent and minimize dark spots, uneven tone, and wrinkles. Not to mention, it’s an acne fighter, too. How does one single vitamin A derivative accomplish so much, you might ask? “It enhances cell turnover and stimulates collagen production,” Joshua Zeichner, M.D previously told Prevention.com. It also thickens the deeper layers of the skin and increases its ability to retain water, therefore minimizing those pesky fine lines.
That’s why Hudson sticks to her moisturizer, as well as the Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Max Serum. They’re the two products she chooses for herself without the opinions of a manager, makeup artist, or other industry professional. After all, she’s constantly being prepped and primed for work.
“I am consistently moving around, so it’s hard to create a regimen,” she said. “So by having [my Olay products, I can] sit with myself, create time for myself, and have a routine that gives me time for me—not what my makeup artist says or what someone else says—it’s what I want to do for myself.”
The singer and actress said the routine has kept her especially grounded during quarantine, as the pandemic and its jarring effects continue to linger. “[I still play] in the mirror throughout the day just trying other products or other things,” she said. “I find this time to be a great time to rejuvenate, refresh, and reconnect with ourselves.” She also makes time to read positive news and exercise. “I've been finding that healing and centering,” she said. “It feels [good] to be able to enjoy the fruits of my labor.”
