The coronavirus pandemic might have passed its peak in Europe (well, the first one at least), but that doesn't mean we shouldn't still be taking precautions seriously to stop the virus' spread. And one of the ways we can protect others is by wearing face masks.

In the UK, wearing a face mask is currently only mandatory when travelling on public transport (it's been that way since 15 June), but the government strongly encourages people to also wear them in "enclosed public spaces where social distancing is not possible or where you are more likely to come into contact with people you do not normally meet."

The reason it's so important to wear a mask when out and about if you can, is because it's proven to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. A study carried out by the University of Edinburgh found that wearing a face mask (even a homemade one) can reduce the spread of coronavirus by up to 90% through air exhaled out the front of the mask.

Despite this, many people around the world are refusing to wear one, and Jennifer Aniston had some words to say about it over on Instagram. Namely: "Wear a damn mask".

"I understand masks are inconvenient and uncomfortable. But don’t you feel that it’s worse that businesses are shutting down... jobs are being lost... health care workers are hitting absolute exhaustion. And so many lives have been taken by this virus because we aren’t doing enough," wrote the Friends actress, alongside a photograph where she's wearing one herself.

Pointing out that wearing a mask really comes down to "the basic goodness of people," Jennifer expressed her surprise that there are still so many people "refusing to take the necessary steps to flatten the curve, and keep each other safe."

"It really shouldn’t be a debate," she added. "If you care about human life, please... just #wearadamnmask 😷 and encourage those around you to do the same."

Hopefully people will sit up and listen to her point, because while you might feel totally well, we know coronavirus can be asymptotic, meaning you could have it and be spreading it without even realising. As one woman, Monika Smith, explained powerfully on Twitter, it is so vital for vulnerable people that we all do our bit.

"I have spent this quarantine alone. I wear a mask every time I go out. I wash my groceries. Wipe down door knobs. Wash my hands incessantly. Grocery shop once a month. I’m immunocompromised and grew up a sick kid so believe me when I say I’ve taken every precaution. I have covid," Monika wrote.

"Being immunocompromised means that this could affect me worse than most. It means I made arrangements for my dog just in case. It means I’ve been doing breathing exercises for months preparing. It shouldn’t mean that you care more about your lips being seen than me staying alive," she bluntly posted.

So yeah, as Jennifer Aniston says: wear a damn mask.
