Jeana Turner Reveals the Truth Behind Shaving Her Head on “America's Next Top Model”: 'I Really Wasn't Ready' (Exclusive)
Jeana Turner talks about 'America's Next Top Model' in an exclusive clip of 'Dark Side of Reality TV' shared with PEOPLE
Jeana Turner is getting honest about her time on America’s Next Top Model in an exclusive clip from VICE's Dark Side of Reality TV.
Turner was the runner-up on the final cycle of the popular reality competition show, bringing viewers to tears as she confessed to the audience that she was diagnosed with alopecia at age 10. Prior to this confession on the show, she consistently wore wigs to cover up her head, but in a touching moment, she shed the wig and shaved her head.
“Removing the wig is really liberating, it's freeing,” Turner said on ANTM. “I feel like the whole world can see me now. I feel like I can see myself now.”
But it seems the model feels a bit differently about the situation now, given her interview with the producers for Dark Side of Reality TV.
In a clip shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Turner cries as she confesses in the docuseries that she “wasn’t ready” to model bald.
“I wouldn’t even run down my driveway to the mailbox if I didn’t have my hair on,” Turner admitted tearfully in the clip. “Like I really wasn’t ready for it to be shaven like that on TV.”
Since leaving the show, Turner has been open with her criticism of the program as well as its long-running host and creator, Tyra Banks.

“And then to be told, ‘Walk around like that. And you have to believe it’s beautiful.’ What if I didn’t?” she continued. “I obviously didn’t think it was beautiful — I was covering it up with wigs.”
She’s one of many former contestants to have come forward with allegations against the host and show, and she dives into the aftermath during the America’s Next Top Model episode of Dark Side of Reality TV.
“We wanted to end the season with a bang and America’s Next Top Model delivered on that,” showrunner Meghan Payne says to PEOPLE. “As someone who grew up watching ANTM, I always looked forward to watching down the cuts to see what new information was divulged.”
Payne noted how many of the show’s confessionals were used “out of context” — and Turner specifically was subject to this harsh editing tactic.
“Jeana Turner explained that they used one of her interviews about her being suicidal and upset, as a response to her being sad over losing a challenge,” Payne alleges, promising that Turner has more to share about her experience on Dark Side of Reality TV.
Banks was contacted regarding the series, though she does not appear in the episode centered on ANTM. PEOPLE reached out to a representative for Banks for comment.
The show has covered other reality favorites, like Toddlers and Tiaras and Hell’s Kitchen, and America’s Next Top Model will round out the first season of this docuseries. Though there is not a second season confirmed just yet, Payne says the Netflix hit Love Is Blind is “at the top of everyone's list" for a future deep dive.
The finale of Dark Side of Reality TV airs on Nov. 19 at 9 p.m. EST on Philo and Hulu + Live TV.
