The 78th Golden Globe Awards were very different from former years. For safety reasons, the annual award ceremony was held virtually without a traditional red carpet. While many stars still dressed to impress, actor Jason Sudeikis opted for a much more casual look that caused quite a stir on Twitter.
The "Ted Lasso" star accepted his award for Best Actor in a Television Musical or Comedy with tousled hair while wearing a tie-dye hooded sweatshirt . Although the 45-year-old admittedly looked very comfortable, fans seem to think he may have looked too comfortable, suggesting that his dressed-down look might be a result of his recent split from longtime partner Olivia Wilde.
The pair announced their split in Nov. 2020 after nine years together and share two children, a 6-year-old son Otis and 4-year-old daughter, Daisy. Months after the couple announced their split, Wilde, 36, reportedly began dating singer Harry Styles after the two met while working on the film "Don't Worry Darling."
"Burnout post-divorce Jason Sudeikis condemning awards in general during an acceptance speech was such a mood," one person tweeted.
"Please leave Jason Sudeikis alone," another wrote. "He’s going through a very public divorce and his ex is possibly dating Harry Styles. You would also show up to the Golden Globes like you just rolled out of bed."
"I don't know why anyone expects Jason Sudeikis to be doing well, his wife literally left him and is now f—king Harry Styles," one person wrote.
"Jason Sudeikis coming in hot with the 'I’m going through a divorce energy," tweeted another.
"Tell me Olivia Wilde left you for Harry Styles without telling me Olivia Wilde left you for Harry Styles," someone added.
Some fans applauded Sudeikis for his look, calling his relaxed appearance the ultimate look after a year in lockdown.
"Jason Sudeikis in a tie-dye hoodie on zoom is a whole pandemic vibe," one person wrote.
Sudeikis wasn't alone in his casual attire, fellow nominees Bill Murray and Jeff Daniels were also dressed down for the typically black tie affair.
In a post-Golden Globes interview, Sudeikis revealed that his hoodie belongs to the merchandise line from his sister Kristin's dance studio, Forward Space.
"I believe when people that you care about do cool, interesting things, that you should support them. So this is no different than that,” Sudeikis said of his decidedly casual look. “I have a multitude of hoodies I could have worn but this one seemed the most appropriate.”
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Sudeikis and Wilde have chosen to bubble-up in Styles's home base in London in an effort to continue co-parenting their two children. A source revealed that the arrangement may be as awkward as it sounds.
"It all seems a bit awkward, things have moved fast between Harry and Olivia so [this] must be strange but how nice they are doing it for the kids," they said. "You’d think it’s all quite difficult."
