Janelle Monae 'So Proud' After Kansas Voters Protect Abortion Rights

Kansas residents voted to protect abortion rights in the state in a referendum held on August 2, local media reported, in what was the first public vote on the issue in the US since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade.

According to an AP estimate, 58.8 percent of voters voted no to a constitutional amendment on abortion. The amendment, dubbed “Value Them Both”, would have affirmed the lack of a constitutional right to abortion in the state and would have meant laws to regulate abortion could be passed by state legislators, according to the official ballot.

According to the ballot, a vote against the amendment “would make no changes to the constitution of the state of Kansas, and could restrict the people, through their elected state legislators, from regulating abortion by leaving in place the recently recognized right to abortion.”

Ahead of the vote, public figures had sought to influence voters. This footage shows Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and actress Janelle Monae urging people to vote against the amendment.

In a video posted to Twitter, the Kansas City native spoke of the “historic” and “infuriating” situation, and urged voters to vote no “on eliminating your right, our right, to make decisions about our bodies”.

JANELLE MONAE: Kansas City, this is Janelle Monae, and I grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, Wyandotte County, to be exact. I've been watching what's happening. And I must say it's historic, and it's infuriating.

Politicians are really trying to take away your rights. They want to tell you what's best for you and your family. They want to ban abortion with no exceptions, and it's just flat out wrong.

Now it's your opportunity to say no. On August 2, please, I'm begging you to vote no on changing the constitution, vote no on eliminating your right, our right to make decisions about our bodies. It's your body. It's your future. We need everybody to show up, so please spread the word to vote no on August 2. I love you, Kansas.
