Jamie Redknapp has analysed what is going wrong at Tottenham and explained why Julian Nagelsmann will fail as Antonio Conte’s replacement, unless chairman Daniel Levy makes one big change.

Conte’s role as Tottenham head coach became untenable when he went on an incredible rant after the 3-3 draw with Southampton. The Italian accused his players of being ‘selfish’ and pointed the finger at Levy, suggesting he is the reason why so many top managers go to north London and don’t win anything.

Spurs eventually pulled the trigger on Sunday evening, announcing Conte’s departure through the following statement: ‘We can announce that head coach Antonio Conte has left the club by mutual agreement. We achieved Champions League qualification in Antonio’s first season at the club. We thank Antonio for his contribution and wish him well for the future.

‘Cristian Stellini will take the team as acting head coach for the remainder of the season, along with Ryan Mason as assistant head coach.’

Levy said: “We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place. We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our club and amazing, loyal supporters.”

As would be expected, there has already been plenty of talk about who might replace Conte. Mauricio Pochettino is high up on Levy’s list.

The pair still have a good relationship from Pochettino’s first spell at Spurs, during which he took them to a Champions League final. However, Nagelsmann has recently emerged as a rival candidate.

The 35-year-old has been released by Bayern Munich due to the German giants trailing Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga standings.

And Fabrizio Romano has told Levy how he can bring Nagelsmann to the Premier League with Spurs.

Tottenham ‘a very difficult club to manage’ – Jamie Redknapp

Redknapp, who played for Spurs between 2002 and 2005, has expressed major concern about Spurs’ situation. He believes Spurs’ next boss, whether it be Nagelsmann or Pochettino, will only be successful if the club starts to get in the mix for ‘blue chip players’ – something which appears unlikely while Levy is in control.

“It’s a very difficult club to manage, it always has been,” the pundit said on Sky Sports. “You look at the managers they’ve gone through in the last few years, whether you like the style of Jose Mourinho or Antonio Conte, they almost bang their heads against a brick wall.

“They find it very difficult to get any control of that club because it is controlled by the chairman. He wants to ensure that he gets all the decisions and all the players.

“I think that’s always been a major problem with Tottenham as a club. The culture is always set from the top. I spent 11 years at Liverpool, I always felt they were trying to get in the right players, signing big names, to give themselves the opportunity to be in the mix to win trophies.

“I never quite get that feeling with Tottenham. I think that was the frustration with Conte.

“The players they got in the summer, Richarlison hasn’t done it, Bissouma hasn’t done it, you can’t necessarily blame the chairman for that. But I believe they are never quite in the mix for the big players. The blue chip players that you want to sign if Tottenham are ever really going to achieve.

“I think that has to change. I look at Richarlison, Ndombele, I wouldn’t call them players that are gonna win you that trophy you need. It’s not run like that, it’s never gonna happen.

“Until that changes – maybe you get owners who really want to compete and sign big-name players – it’s always gonna be the same problem unfortunately.”

Fellow former Spurs player Jamie O’Hara has also given his verdict on the Spurs manager situation. In a tweet, he wrote: ‘Poch or Nagelsmann. Poch [is] great with youngsters, Nagelsmann is [a] top manager.

‘Writing was on the wall [for Conte]. When you come out and slaughter the whole club, he had to go after that. Questions marks need to be raised though, too many big managers come to Spurs and it doesn’t work. Why?’
