Jamie Carragher slams Antonio Conte over Spurs rant as Arsenal’s rise ‘kills a lot of his argument’
Jamie Carragher has hit out at Antonio Conte after the Tottenham Hotspur manager was left fuming after his side’s 3-3 draw against Southampton.
Spurs surrendered a two-goal lead against Southampton on Saturday. James Ward-Prowse’s late penalty earned Ruben Selles’ side a point.
This is a fresh blow for Tottenham, who have exited the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Champions League in disappointing fashion.
The 3-3 draw leaves Tottenham fourth in the Premier League, but Newcastle are just two points behind them and have two games in hand. Liverpool have also played two fewer games than Spurs and are six points adrift in sixth.
Conte refused to bite his lip during his remarkable post-match press conference as he hit out at his Tottenham players.
“What we’re seeing in these last matches, I don’t like it. I’m not used to seeing this. I see a lot of selfish players. I don’t see a team.
“Frustration is not for today. It’s right to tell the truth and keep our eyes open – the truth is we have to give satisfaction to our fans and we are not doing this – we all have to take responsibility. It’s happened before with other coaches. Maybe if we start to think the players have to take responsibility it’s the right moment, otherwise, we’re out of Europe.
“From what I’m seeing to talk about the Champions League is useless because at this moment we’re not a team. We don’t have spirit, we’re not putting heart into the pitch for the badge or the sense of belonging. If we don’t have this we will finish the season really badly. It was a clear problem today but it’s the end of a cycle of bad results. The fans deserve much better than this team.”
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was quick to respond to Conte’s outburst. He urged Tottenham’s hierachy to put the head coach “out of his misery”.
“Conte wants to be sacked in this international break. Spurs should just put him out of his misery and do it tonight,” Carragher tweeted.
Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney responded: “Interested to know if you disagree with what’s being said though Jamie? Agree with your point by the way.”
Carragher answered: “His point about Spurs not winning for a long time is right, but you don’t speak about your own club like that.
“Especially when you’re getting paid fortunes by them!
“The improvement in Arsenal this season after finishing above them last season kills a lot of his arguments.”
