Jamie Carragher has explained how Newcastle United can beat Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday afternoon, with Eddie Howe urged to use one tactic in particular.

Newcastle have beaten Premier League sides Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Leicester City and Southampton to reach their first cup final since 1999. Howe’s team have the chance to win the Carabao Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

However, it will not be easy as they must overcome a Man Utd side in great form. Erik ten Hag has got the Red Devils firing and they are unbeaten in nine matches across all competitions. That includes victories over Nottingham Forest, Leicester and Barcelona.

During an appearance on Sky Sports, former Liverpool defender Carragher has sent Howe some advice. He thinks Newcastle should fly out of the blocks and hunt Man Utd right from the first whistle, due to them having more rest in the build up to the final than Ten Hag’s men.

Carragher said: “The fact that Man Utd played on Thursday night and have played a lot of games – if I was Eddie Howe I would be saying, ‘You have got to start this game as if there is only half an hour left’.

“You’ve just got to go for it. Try and make this game as fast and as intense as you possibly can right from the start. You have to start quick and really go after Manchester United.”

The pundit continued: “We talk about Man Utd as being fresh and energetic, but Eddie Howe and everybody behind it – they’ve been one of the top teams in the division this season. They went to Old Trafford and got a 0-0 draw earlier in the season, so why shouldn’t they believe that they can go there and win?

“I feel Man Utd will win, and they will be favourites, and the goalkeeping issue is a problem for them, but if you are Newcastle United you’ve got to get that out of your head mentally and move on. It’s not, ‘We can’t win a game of football because we haven’t got Nick Pope in goal’.

Jamie Carragher downplays Nick Pope absence

“Defensively, all season, it’s not just Nick Pope, the back four have got the best defensive record in the Premier League. They are a tough nut to crack. They’ve got to go there with energy and belief.”

Newcastle fans will be concerned about the change of keeper. Pope is suspended for the Wembley clash after picking up a red card in the recent loss to Liverpool. And with Martin Dubravka cup-tied, Loris Karius is likely to start in goal.

Man Utd will try to capitalise on this by testing Karius out early. After all, he made two bad mistakes when Liverpool lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid in 2018.

But as Carragher states, Pope is not the only reason why Newcastle have been so solid at the back this campaign. Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn have performed exceptionally well and they will do all they can to prevent Karius from having to deal with plenty of Man Utd shots.

Newcastle will be eagerly awaiting news on Marcus Rashford. The forward, who has been in blistering form of late, is a doubt after picking up an ankle injury against Barca on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has revealed a Newcastle target has agreed a long-term contract with another club.
