The suggestion of Gavin & Stacey returning for another season just won't go away, especially not when creators and writers James Corden and Ruth Jones keep teasing fans about the possibility.

The BBC comedy made a huge comeback with its Christmas special last year, drawing in an incredible 18.5 million viewers altogether between its live broadcast on Christmas Day and its later catch-up figures.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk about the show's impressive stats, Corden and Jones teased that it could return for another round – so hopefully we can finally find out if Smithy (Corden) said yes to Nessa's (Jones) marriage proposal.

"It's mind-blowing that so many people watched our show – we still can't get our heads around it, what a massive compliment," the duo said.

"We are indebted to the BBC for their incredible support but most importantly to those 18.5 million viewers for watching. We just hope one day we can let them know what Smithy said next."

After being viewed by an incredible 11.6 million viewers on Christmas Day, Gavin & Stacey's Christmas special went on to be watched for a combined 707,889 hours on iPlayer between Christmas Day and December 29 – which equates to about 80 years.

On the show's huge viewing figures, Director of BBC Content Charlotte Moore said: "These incredible viewing figures demonstrate the power of British comedy and the love for Gavin and Stacey.

"I want to thank James and Ruth for this gem and like everyone I'm longing to find out what happens next."

Gavin & Stacey's 2019 Christmas special is available now on DVD.
