Jackpot! These comfy Birks-like slides were the winning hand on my Vegas vacay

They took me from the mean streets of the strip to the limpid pools of the spa.

Packing for vacation can be a real challenge, especially with the costs to check a bag these days. Carry-on is the way to go, but that means being extra savvy when you start filling that suitcase. Shoes take up the most room and add the most weight, but I've discovered a light-as-a-feather, supportive pair that's great for travel. When a friend recently asked if I could accompany her to Las Vegas, I jumped at the chance and knew exactly which shoes to bring. Read on for five reasons why the Freedom Moses slides should accompany you on your next trip, or anywhere, for that matter.

Quick overview

Comfy and cute, they come in a bevy of patterns and colors — 39 to be exact. This silver pair will shine up just about any outfit.

First and foremost, I need a comfortable shoe. I have chronic hip pain and my tootsies wear out if I'm on my feet too long. Freedom Moses slides are made to hug your foot. While they're not cushioned, per se, since they're made of durable plastic, the heel has a divet and the toe area is sculpted to cradle your feet, while a subtle arch gives you support. I found these as comfy on the 106-degree boiling streets as on the hard marble floors of the hotel shops, to the carpet and beyond.

I chose metallic gold, which gives an otherwise casual shoe a little glam. I wore them with dresses, shorts and coverups. They slide on easily like a slipper, but have enough grip to walk around town. Plus, they're waterproof, so I literally wore them into the pool and around the hot tub at the spa. That means less shoes to pack, since these can go anywhere. These are your everyday shoe, your dress sandal and your flip-flops, all in one.

While I opted for a neutral metallic, the Freedom Moses shoes come in some seriously fun prints and bright shades, so you can grab multiple pairs for every occasion. They're available in kid sizes too, so your whole family can sport these versatile wonders. The animal prints are on-trend and the tie-dye and cosmic prints are unexpectedly beachy. Or opt for this marbled blue and white or a Creamsicle-like orange. Go wild!

Check out the fun texture on this Bali Sands style — the rattan look just screams beach vacation, but they're neutral enough to go with anything in your closet.

When a brand takes care of its employees, worries about the environment and is cruelty-free, that speaks to me. Freedom Moses promises to not harm animals, and their shoes are recyclable in some areas. Just a little bonus so you can feel good about what's on your feet.

Last but not least, they're happily inexpensive. While the price can go as low as 20 bucks, most styles are around $45 or $50. For a shoe that works in any situation, it's well worth the cost. Did I mention I've been wearing mine for over a year now? They hold up, so they're worth the investment. I've seen very little wear and tear on them and I used them all summer long.

Terazzo Lagoon? Sounds like vacation sandals to me.
