Italy marks national day of COVID mourning

Prime Minister Mario Draghi, along with Bergamo mayor Giorgio Gori, led the tribute to victims of the pandemic in the northern city of Bergamo, which was the epicenter of the initial onslaught of the disease.

In the morning Draghi placed a wreath at the town cemetery and stood for a minute with his head bowed as a horn player played the solemn notes of the "Last Post."

Flags outside Italian institutions flew at half-mast throughout the country.
