Italian volunteers try to save stranded fish

STORY: Fish including tench, catfish and carp usually spend winter in the canals or pools of the river Po tributaries such as Orchetto, where the water temperatures are higher.

Volunteers used nets to try and move the stranded fish, which were struggling for oxygen, due to the large number of fish that had become stuck.

The absence of oxygen was not due to chemical pollutants, the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (ARPA) reported, after carrying out initial analyses of water samples in laboratories.

According to ARPA, the scarcity of water caused by the summer drought has reduced the number and depth of natural pools in the river, reducing the number of winter refuges for the fish, making them overcrowded.
