Italian Red Cross Personnel Rescue Motorist From Car Surrounded by Floodwater
Italian emergency services responded to deadly flooding around the city of Catania, in Sicily, on October 26, as a Mediterranean hurricane continued to batter southern Italy for the third day.
Italy’s national firefighters, the Vigili del Fuoco, said a man died after being swept away by floodwaters in the town of Gravina di Catania. The agency said on Tuesday that it had carried out 300 rescue operations due to the flooding.
Il Giornale reported around 400 mm (approximately 16 inches) of rain fell in less than 24 hours by October 25, turning roads into rivers carrying cars and debris.
