Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has ordered Genting Highlands casinos to close, saying that he was previously unaware they were still operating.
However, he did not elaborate on previous operation circumstances, nor the reason behind the closure or how long it will take effect.
“I didn’t know the casinos were operating before this. I have ordered the closure yesterday (Friday),” he reportedly told news portal The Vibes.
Malaysiakini had contacted Ismail and his team on the matter, who asked us to refer to the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry.
On May 7, the Health Ministry detected 16 Covid-19 positive individuals from screenings done on 28 people from a group of tourists who had travelled to Genting Highlands, Pahang from Alor Setar, Kedah.
They had taken two buses on a trip from April 22 to 24, which was organised by a registered tourism company in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.
Under the MCO 3.0, casinos such as Resorts World Genting have reportedly remained open albeit with restrictions on gaming and retail offerings.
