The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max has finally arrived — and they’re pretty major. And while both models boast innovative features that’ll make you want to add one to your cart ASAP, we had to ask ourselves, “is it worth $1,399 sticker price?” In case you were about to hit that purchase button, here’s everything we love —and everything we’re torn about — when it comes to Apple’s latest smartphone.

New chic and innovative display technologies

One of the first things you’ll notice is the models’ new sophisticated design. Available in four stainless steel finishes including steel graphite, silver, gold, and pacific blue, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max features a gorgeous surgical-grade stainless steel band paired with a precision-milled matte glass back and a ceramic shield front for incredible durability.

Tougher than any smartphone glass, it is infused with nano-ceramic crystals to dramatically improve toughness and increase drop performance by 4x.2! As for liquid protection, the iPhone 12 Pro models also come with an industry-leading IP68 rating to withstand water submersion up to six meters for up to 30 minutes(!) — that also includes spills against coffee, soup and soda.

While the iPhone 12 Pro features Super Retina XDR display, the Pro Max models offer the largest display ever on an iPhone and the highest resolution featuring nearly 3.5 million pixels for a true-to-life colour and quality.

It’s fast

Designed for Apple users and creatives who want the most out of iPhone, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max is powered with 5G speed (fifth generation of wireless technology), thanks to the A14 Bionic chip, the fastest chip in a smartphone, to deliver seamless streaming, downloads and uploads, higher quality video, more responsive gaming, real-time interactivity in apps, FaceTime in high definition, and much more. With the world-class hardware and software, the newest models also offer a secure, fast connection, reducing the need to connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots, and extends battery life by intelligently assessing 5G needs and balancing data usage, speed, and power in real-time.

A state-of-art camera system

Made with Apple’s all-new ProRAW technology, the iPhone 12 offers more creative control in photos including colour, detail, and dynamic range natively on iPhone or with other professional photo editing apps and enables the first end-to-end Dolby Vision video experience of up to 60 fps. Backed up by A14 Bionic, the camera system is perfect for capturing insta-worth moments and includes an expansive ultra-wide camera, a telephoto camera with an even longer focal length on iPhone 12 Pro Max, and new wide cameras to take professional-quality images and video in bright and even low-light environments.

Faster and more efficient than ever, A14 Bionic enables powerful computational photography and faster photo and video editing right on device.

A wireless experience

Although there’s no denying how great all the new features are, we’d say the biggest dealbreaker is iPhone 12 Pro’s non-optional wireless charging. Yup, that means all of the chargers you’ve collected over the years for your car, work, school and your home all go to waste. Sure, it sounds cool and offers a more efficient experience when it comes to recharging battery life but the Apple MagSafe charger and accessories also call for an additional expense as they are all sold separately. But if you already own a wireless charging dock from third-party manufacturers, those will work fine, too!

But the thing about the Apple MagSafe is that it features an array of magnets around the wireless charging coil that perfectly connects to the iPhone every time and provides up to 15W of power.

The lack of a power adapter also means absolutely no option for traditional wired EarPods and headphones. So if you don’t already own AirPods, you’ll really need them now for the iPhone 12 Pro.

So. how do I buy it?

iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB starting at $1,399 and $1,549, respectively. Customers can also get iPhone 12 Pro for $1,029 (CAD) with trade-in and iPhone 12 Pro Max for $1,109 with trade-in from apple.com and at Apple Store locations. While iPhone 12 Pro is available for purchase as of Oct. 23, Pre-orders for the Pro Max begin Nov. 6 and will be available for purchase Nov.13.
