Indian Sand Artist Celebrates Rishi Sunak, UK's First British-Asian Prime Minister

A sand sculptor in the Indian city of Puri created a tribute on October 25 to Rishi Sunak after he was appointed the United Kingdom’s first British-Asian and Hindu prime minister.

“Heartiest congratulations @RishiSunak,” the artist, Sudarsan Pattnaik, wrote in posts on Instagram and Facebook.

Pattnaik regularly builds striking artworks on Puri’s beach, and recently created sculptures celebrating India’s national cricket team, the Hindu festival of Diwali, and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which was being hosted in India in October and November.

From 2017 to 2021, he held a Guinness World Record for the world’s “tallest sandcastle” after constructing a 48-foot-tall sculpture on Puri beach. The record was broken in Denmark in July 2021, according to Guinness World Records. Credit: Sudarsan Pattnaik via Storyful
