"22nd September is celebrated as National Elephant Appreciation Day. It is celebrated because as you know, celebrating a day for every animal is important in the world and because of us, development and urbanization, the forests are disappearing. So, we should give these animals whatever they deserve as they help maintain balance in nature and ecosystem and we should appreciate that the elephants are a blessing for us."

The center treats elephants with feet and leg ailments

and gives them baths and fruits as a treat

(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) DIRECTOR, CONSERVATION PROJECT, WILDLIFE SOS, BAIJU RAJ M.V., SAYING:

"Instead of falling and dying on roads, it is better that these elephants live a free life, eat what they like, take their favorite bath for their remaining life because as you know elephants roam on roads during summers and they walk for miles to get water. The animal that drinks 150-250 litres of water does not get it from morning till evening and therefore, its behavior (will change) and the internal system is affected. So, we can give them good quality water, they can roam in water and we try to give them a good life."
