Veteran actor Ng Man-tat passed away on Saturday (27 Feb) at 70. According to news portal HK01, Ng died at Union Hospital at 5.21 pm with his wife and children by his side.
The actor had liver cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy.
The well-known actor was born in Xiamen, Fujian, China and moved to Hong Kong at seven. In 1993, he took up an artist training course and entered the film and television industry at 22.
Ng appeared in movies like The Justice of Life and The Final Combat. He picked up Best Supporting Actor award at the 10th Hong Kong Film Awards for his role in A Moment of Romance.
Actor Tin Kai Man, who has worked with Ng and Stephen Chow, said that the latter contacted him about his situation.
"Stephen called to find out about Ng's situation and see where he can help. He has always cared about his friends, but he is very low-key about it," Tin said.
Ng and Chow teamed up in various famous comedies including, Hail The Judge, Fight Back To School, A Chinese Odyssey and Shaolin Soccer. However, the pair stopped working together after 2001's Shaolin Soccer.
Ng was recognised for playing the "golden supporting role" alongside Chow. He once said: "With the help of the supporting role, the protagonist will play well."
