Ian Wright has told Manchester United that they should submit a £60m player-plus-cash offer to Tottenham Hotspur for their striker Harry Kane.
The England striker initially looked likely to leave Tottenham in 2021 as he wanted to join a club that regularly competes for trophies.
Man City were in the running to sign him but they eventually withdrew their interest as Tottenham were demanding around £150m for their prized asset.
Kane subsequently verbally committed his future to Spurs but he is yet to sign a new contract. His current deal is up at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
Spurs will no doubt be desperate to keep their academy product long-term. He has been in stunning form this term as he has grabbed 16 goals in 21 Premier League outings.
A move to Bayern Munich has been mentioned but Man Utd have also been advised to sign the forward. The Red Devils are in need of a marquee signing up front after Cristiano Ronaldo left the club at the end of last year.
Man Utd have moved quickly to sign a temporary replacement as Wout Weghorst has been brought in on a loan deal. He is competing for a place with Anthony Martial as Marcus Rashford has mostly been operated on the flanks this season.
Martial has impressed when he has played this season under Erik ten Hag but the Frenchman has been in and out of the team due to injuries.
Wright thinks Man Utd would be wise to offer Martial to Tottenham as part of a cash-plus-player deal for Kane.
“If Man Utd came now, [for] Harry Kane with a year left, let’s say they put £60m on the table and we’ll throw in someone, Martial, whatever… it’s a very good deal,” Wright said on Wrighty’s House.
“If Man Utd have got any serious thinking about what we need to do next, it’s a No 9. It seems like a no-brainer that Harry Kane is the person [they should sign]. He takes them somewhere else.”
He added: “Spurs fans will say ‘you know what, good luck Harry’.”
Man Utd fell to a 3-2 defeat to Arsenal last weekend and Wright feels that Eddie Nketiah was “one of the main differences” in that game.
“One of the main differences was Eddie Nketiah, a No 9. That’s what Man United didn’t have, because they had (Wout) Weghorst up there but he wasn’t a threat if we’re going to be totally honest, he was not a threat,” Wright continued.
“When you’re looking at Man United’s trajectory at the minute and where they’re moving, get Harry Kane for three years. United will definitely do something because they’re not a million miles away right now.”
At the moment, Kane is loving life at Tottenham and it has been reported that he would be ‘open’ to extending his deal. Though you imagine Antonio Conte’s future may impact upon his final decision.
