Hyundai recalls more than 200K cars, SUVs over faulty rearview cameras

Hyundai recalled more than 226,000 vehicles due to issues with the rearview camera, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Due to a damaged printed circuit board, the rearview camera image may fail to display,” according to the website’s summary of the recall. “As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, ‘Rear Visibility.'”

The company said images from the back camera may not appear on the screen of Santa Fe SUVs and Elantra cars made in 2021 and 2022. The malfunction reduces driver visibility increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai has offered to fix all back cameras at no cost to owners and will notify consumers with impacted vehicles by Jan. 19.

The recall stemming from rearview camera issues follows a separate recall by its sister company Kia early this week due to loss of drive power.
