Hussain Najadi murdered over land deal gone sour - police
The murder of Arab-Malaysian Development Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi is believed to have been due to property deals which had gone sour, police revealed.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh said initial investigations showed the motive was linked to the buying and selling of property involving the 75-year-old Hussain.
Mohmad said police were interviewing seven people who witnessed the incident and had also taken images from several closed-circuit television videos (CCTVs) in the area.
"We want to record statements from the witnesses and compare their version of events to get a clear picture of what transpired," he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters.
Mohmad said the parties responsible for hiring the assassins had yet to be ascertained although police had leads indicating real estate deals which had turned sour was the motive.
He added that the client whom Hussain had met along Jalan Ceylon on Monday prior to the incident would also be called to have his statement recorded.
"I urge the public not to speculate about the case as it is being probed and there are many different angles to be taken into consideration."
It is understood that Hussain's wife Cheong Mei Kuen, 49, is in stable condition and has been transferred to the Prince Court Hospital from the Tung Shin Hospital.
In Monday's 1.50pm incident, Hussain and Cheong were walking towards their car at Lorong Ceylon when a gunman approached them and fired several shots.
Hussain was shot in the chest and ribs while Cheong was injured after being hit on the hand and thigh.
The gunman was said to be wearing a long sleeve checked shirt and khaki pants.
The gunman then fled in a white and red Proton Waja with two others waiting inside.
The AmBank Group was founded in 1975 as Arab-Malaysian Development Bank by Hussain via his holding company AIAK (Arab Investments for Asia Kuwait).
He took the bank public via the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) in 1981.
