A trader has been charged at the Kota Bharu Magistrate's Court in Kelantan today with allegedly causing injury to his wife, who he married just over a month ago.

The accused, Mohd Hafizul Muhammad, however, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to the charges.

According to the charges, the 37-year-old had intentionally caused hurt to his wife Hilwa Muhamad, 37, at a home in Kubang Kerian, at 3.30pm on April 8.

This was said to be because he was angry that the victim had swum in the swimming pool of a resort they went to.

He is accused under Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 326A of the same act for causing hurt to a spouse.

Section 326A doubles the punishment under Section 323 which allows for jail of up to one year, or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

Magistrate Kamarul Hasyime Rosli set bail at RM4,000 with one surety.

Earlier, DPP Muhammad Shahril Ramli asked for bail to be set at RM7,000 on condition that the accused does not disturb the victim and witnesses.

Case re-mention will be held on May 18.
